Adieu Monsieur Haffmann

October 24-26, 2025
The Calderwood Pavilion at the
Boston Center for the Arts

Paris, 1942. Jews are required to wear yellow stars.

On the verge of bankruptcy, Joseph Haffmann, a Jewish jeweler, offers his employee Pierre Vigneau the chance to take over the management of his shop: “I would like you to live here with your wife for the next few months while the situation returns to normal... the Haffmann et Fils jewelry store would become the Vigneau jewelry store.” Knowing that Pierre must also take the risk of clandestinely housing his “former” boss within the walls of the shop, he ends up accepting Joseph’s deal on the condition that he accepts his own: “Isabelle and I want to have a child at all costs. After several unsuccessful attempts, we have had tests... I am sterile, Mr. Haffmann... I would like you to have sexual relations with my wife until she becomes pregnant...”

🇫🇷 Performed in French with English captions.
